The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) has launched the fifth Nile Basin Media Awards, inviting journalists and media professionals to showcase excellence in reporting.

The awards were launched on 6 August 2026 as one of the side events of the 8th Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF8). The fifth edition places particular emphasis on impact.

It recognizes journalism that goes beyond reporting an issue to show how it has informed public debate, influenced action, amplified community voices or contributed to positive change.

For NBI, the awards are an opportunity to recognize the media’s contribution to the Nile Basin conversation and encourage reporting that helps people understand issues affecting the Basin and the value of cooperation.

The winning journalists came from Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda. As was the case with the 4th edition of the Awards in 2023, journalists from all 10 Member States are eligible to submit entries in 2026

“Journalism can do more than inform. It can influence conversations, bring issues to the attention of decision-makers and give communities a stronger voice,” said NBI Executive Director Dr Nestor Niyonzima. “With the fifth edition of the Nile Basin Media Awards, we want to recognize journalism that demonstrates this kind of impact and shows how good reporting can contribute to positive change.”

NBI is undertaking the awards jointly with Media in Cooperation and Transition (MiCT), with funding and continued support from the Government of Germany.

“We sincerely appreciate the Government of Germany for its continued support and commitment to the Nile Basin Media Awards, and MiCT for working with NBI to coordinate this initiative,” said Dr Niyonzima. “This partnership recognizes the important contribution that strong, independent and informed media can make to cooperation and sustainable development across the Nile Basin.”

Entries for the fifth Nile Basin Media Awards are now open. Journalists and media professionals can find the award categories, eligibility requirements, submission guidelines and FAQ on the NBDF8 website.
