Nile Basin Flash Flood Early Warning System (NB-FFEWS)

Nile Basin Flash Flood Early Warning System (NB-FFEWS)

The Nile Basin Flash Flood Early Warning System (NB-FFEWS) is a near real time forecast system developed by NELSAP-CU with support from World Bank- CIWA. The purpose of the system is to contribute towards enhancing preparedness and resilience of communities in the Nile Basin countries to flash flood disasters.

Flash floods are often caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than 6 hours. Flash floods usually happen within minutes of the causative rainfall, limiting the time available to warn and protect the public, leaving damage to lives, property and infrastructure.

Early warning forecast information from the NB FFEWS aims to support national meteorological and hydrological services in the Nile Basin member states in obtaining reliable and effective flash flood early warnings for flash flood prone areas. The FFEWS is expected to improve disaster management efficiency at local, national and regional levels.

Flash flood early warning information is disseminated daily from the NB FFEWS via email with a lead time of 48 hours and is expected to reach affected communities through existing National dissemination channels.
