The Inception Workshop on the Development of the Eastern Nile Water Resource (EN WRs) Models and Tools took place in Bishoftu, Ethiopia from 27th to 28th June 2024.

Water resources modeling tools and knowledge products are key resources in water resource planning and management and development services. ENTRO has developed and archived the ENPM modeling and analytical tools, toolkits, geodatabase, and knowledge products. The ENPM models include the RiverWare, RIBASIM, MikeBasin (Mike River and Mike Basin) as part of the NB-DSS, HEC-ResSim, and SWAT models which are used in water resources planning and management.

The Modeling and Knowledge Management thematic area aims to develop robust WRP models and analytical tools in the EN region. It also involves creating data and information packages for various WRP models investment planning projects. ENTRO will integrate and operationalize these resources, making them accessible through the Integrated Knowledge Portal (IKP) system and other platforms. The goal is to enhance water resources planning and management in the EN region.
Development of the Eastern Nile Water Resources Models and tools assignment aims to include
the following work packages:

  • WP1 – Hydrological and hydraulic modeling
  • WP2 – Water resources planning modeling
  • WP3 – Sediment (and erosion) transport modeling
  • WP4 – Enhance Eastern Nile toolkits
  • WP5 – Assess, streamline and update ENTROs data and information platforms
  • WP6 – Development of Eastern Nile practitioners web-forum

The Inception Workshop on the Development of the Eastern Nile Water Resource (EN WRs) workshop took place from June 27-28, 2024, with the primary goal of consulting and receiving feedback from key stakeholders such as the Nile Basin Water Resources Technical Working Groups. The purpose of this consultation is to gather input on the methodology proposed by the Consultant.

The specific objectives:

  • Provide an overview of the scope and objectives of each work package.
  • Assess and provide feedback on the consultant approach and methodology presented in the draft inception report.
  • Develop strategies for enhancing/developing existing tools and platforms for improved water resources management.
  • Outline a road map for capacity building, streamlining knowledge platforms and establishing a web-based knowledge exchange forum.

The participants of this workshop are experts in water resources modeling, water resources planning, and sediment transport modeling from the Eastern Nile (EN) countries, members of the Regional Technical Working Group, and staff from the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) centers.
The expected outputs of workshop is to produce several key outputs, including: providing assessment and feedback on the consultant's approach and methodology outlined in the draft inception report, revising the methodology and detailed work-plan, sharing additional information related to the models and tools used in the EN countries, developing a training and capacity-building plan, creating strategies to enhance existing tools and platforms, establishing a framework for streamlining knowledge platforms, and setting up a web-based knowledge exchange forum. The workshop will also focus on increasing participants' awareness of EN water resources models and tools.
