3rd RCRP Internship Batch Certificate Award Ceremony
Wednesday 7th of October 2026

Enhancing Eastern Nile Flood Forecasting Through Regional Youth Collaboration.

Since 2010, the Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO) has integrated its Internship and Young Professionals Program into its core mission, successfully graduating 30 batches of young professionals over the past 15 years.

Most recently, ENTRO hosted the  3rd (2026 Flood Season) Internship Batch under the Regional Climate Resilience Program (RCRP) for East & Southern Africa, running from July 1 to September 30, 2026. This cohort brought together 5 interns from across the Eastern Nile countries—from South Sudan, Sudan, and Ethiopia—for targeted capacity-building and specialized training.

The main objective of the internship program is to generate and issue daily forecasts of rainfall, river discharge, and water levels across selected catchments for rainfall forecasts, as well as flood and water level forecasts at selected locations, covering the Baro-Akobo-Sobat, Blue Nile, Lake Tana, and Tekeze-Setit-Atbara sub-basins.

The process integrates available satellite and ground-based data, supported by close collaboration with national and international agencies specializing in meteorology and emergency preparedness and response. Forecasts are updated daily, and real-time 10-day lead-time flood bulletins with critical flood-related information are shared with water affairs ministries across the EN region, as well as with communities residing in flood-prone areas.

In addition, the bulletin is also disseminated through more than 200 email groups, the ENTRO/NBI portal, and social media, including a WhatsApp group with over 150 users.

Throughout the three-month program, the interns completed key tasks, including:

3rd RCRP Internship Batch  During Presentation.

Issuing flood forecasts for the 2026 flood season, which includes

  • Generation and dissemination of daily forecasts, as well as daily and weekly bulletins, for flood-prone areas in the Lake Tana (LT), Blue Nile (BN), Baro-Akobo-Sobat (BAS), and Tekeze-Setit-Atbara (TSA) sub-basins.
  • Reviewing and analyzing the 2025 flood season, including flood impacts and assessment findings across the Eastern Nile region.
  • Updating and maintaining the Flood Forecasting and Early Warning (FFEW) system and hydrodynamic models.

3rd RCRP Internship Batch Certificate Award Ceremony

Support Climate Risk Management (CRM) activities

  • Support the CRM related to Flood Risk Mitigation (FRM) activity under the Regional Climate Resilience (RCRP) project for BAS selec areas, Yabus catchment and Unyama-Amee study areas by collecting all necessary data/ information.
  • Prepare a country-specific data gap analysis report that can support the preparation for the data collection project activities. The report will include data types, encompassing temporal and spatial scales for data collection; survey area selections for additional data collection; and flood-prone community identification.

The program concluded with the interns delivering their final technical presentations. Following the presentations, a graduation ceremony was held with ENTRO technical staff to celebrate the completion of their work and their contributions to regional climate resilience.
