Abstract
The Strategic Water Resources Analysis (SWRA) started with a workshop with the Nile-TAC during 13 – 14 March 2013. In the workshop the Nile Technical Advisory Committee members identified issues concerning availability, use and vulnerability of the shared water resources of the Nile Basin. Subsequently, NBI carried out preliminary analysis on evaluation of potential for water saving from improved irrigation efficiency in the Nile River Basin and presented its results to the 23rd NBI Council of Ministers (Nile-COM) meeting in Dodoma, Tanzania, in June 2015. Noting the importance of issues related to future water availability in the Nile Basin, the Nile-COM instructed the NBI to ‘… carry out assessment of current and future demands in the Nile Basin as part of its analytical work’ Based on this directive, NBI Phase 1 of the SWRA was conducted. The Phase I assessment established the baseline of the water resources supply and demand in the basin based on existing infrastructure and a compilation of national development plans.
