Abstract

Volume I (Main Report) of the Feasibility Study for the Dinger Bereha irrigation project, which also has 5 volumes containing 13 Annexes, as well as maps and drawings prepared for Phase 2 of the Engineering Component of the Eastern Nile Irrigation and Drainage Study. Following the completion of Phase I (Diagnosis and Planning Phase), 15,000 ha equally divided between Ethiopia and Sudan were identified and studied up to feasibility level. These Feasibility Studies aimed to contribute to attaining the agricultural sector goals of the participating countries (Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan), towards an integrated approach to irrigation and drainage development in the Eastern Nile sub-basin as a means for enhancing food security, poverty reduction, improved welfare of the rural population, and for sustainable natural resource management. These Feasibility Studies involved advanced investigations including determination of basic engineering design for barrages, diversions, pumping stations, irrigation and drainage infrastructure, land use and cropping pattern and systems, agricultural inputs, credit and crop production, storage, transport and marketing, and economic and financial viability, environmental impact assessment and social desirability of the projects. Detail terms of reference for the next stage (detail design) of the projects have also been prepared.
