Rwimi Irrigation development and watershed management (Bunyangabu)
Overview
Summary
The Rwimi Irrigation Project was identified under the LEAF II Project and has been taken over by the Directorate of Water Development under the water for production department. The project is located near Rwimi Township in Bunyangabu District, western Uganda. It draws its name from Rwimi river flowing through the area drains into the Katonga River. Elevation differences within the focal area are substantial. The river valley descends from North to South from 1290 m to 1120 m. In the Northern and Eastern part of the area the slopes ascend rather steep from the river valley. The area south of the stream is more flat. Slopes in the NorthEast range between 20-25%. Slopes in the Southern part of the area are moderately, and stay mainly under 10%. The scheme involved the development of 4,000 ha of irrigation land. Feasibility studies and design of bulk water systems and irrigation schemes of Rwimi, in the Districts of Kasese/Bunyangabu, are at 50% progress (Draft Feasibility report submitted and reviewed)
