Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Multipurpose Project
Energy Hydro Power Plant
Overview
Summary
Regional Rusumo Falls Hydropower Electric and Multipurpose Project is a run-of-river hydropower scheme on the Kagera River. The project, which is located near the town of Rusumo on the Rwanda-Tanzania border has two components: (a) construction of an 80 MW power plant; and (b) construction of three power transmission lines from Rusumo to the three countries. The project will boost reliable power supply to the electricity grids of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania, reduce electricity costs, promote renewable power, spur job-led economic development and pave the way for more dynamic regional cooperation, peace and stability among the countries of the Nile Equatorial Lakes (NEL) sub-region in East Africa. The project includes a Local Area Development Program (LADP) under which there have been livelihood support and job creation activities, rehabilitation of health centres, provision of drinking water supplies and rehabilitation of feeder roads for project-affected communities. The power plant, whose construction started in March 2017 is expected to be commissioned in March 2021. The three beneficiary countries have mandated Nile Equatorial Lake Subsidiary Action Programme (NELSAP-CU) to manage the implementation of the project. Once completed, a special purpose vehicle - the Rusumo Power Company Ltd (RPCL) - will take on the operation and maintenance of the power station.
