Gongo Multipurpose Water resources development project

The Gongo dam site is situated about 7 km downstream of Yala Town. The dam is located about 1 km downstream of an existing road bridge. The proposed dam height (from JICA, 1992) is 74 m. The original main purpose of the identified dam site is for power generation. As part of the proposed multipurpose project it is proposed to an irrigation component, water supply for part of the densely populated Vihiga Sub County, although this would have to be pumped, and for communities downstream of the site, fisheries and aquaculture, tourism and recreation, agro-processing, watershed management and flood control. The reservoir backs up to just short of Yala town and would inundate a significant number of homesteads. It should be noted that the target area for water supply overlaps significantly with the target area of the Mushangumbo MPP.

A 74m high dam would store a volume of about 120 Mm3 and inundate an area of 6km2. Installed capacity is 17.11 MW. Size of land irrigated is7,600 ha. Investment costs are US$ 1,040.2 million.
