Mara Valley Multipurpose Water Resources Development Project

Water Agricultural irrigation and drainage

Overview

Summary

Mara Valley Multipurpose Water Resource Development Project aims to boost national and regional economic development through infrastructural and non-structural interventions in irrigation development, potable and livestock water supply, drought mitigation and catchment improvement/ enhancement. The Mara Valley Project lies on the left bank of the Mara River in Ngoreme Division of Serengeti District, Mara Region, Northern Tanzania. The project area covers 10 sites in ten villages within the Mara Valley and is envisaged to include irrigation development of 8,340 ha, with the irrigation water abstracted from the Mara River through diversion headworks and intake (no dam or impoundment). The project will also include restoration of critically degraded 'hotspots"™ in the project"™s upstream catchment of 13,750 km2.

The prefeasibility and diagnostic studies of the project were completed in 2012 under NELSAP while the feasibility studies and preparation of detailed designs is underway with funding from WB/CIWA.
