Sio-Malaba-Malakisi Integrated Watershed Management Project
Overview
Summary
Sio-Malaba-Malakisi is a shared transboundary resource of Kenya and Uganda. The basin consists of the Malaba-Malakisi catchment, which originates from the southern slope of Mount Elgon and drains towards Lake Kyoga, and the Sio catchment, which originates near Bungoma town and drains into Lake Victoria. The basin has experienced significant land use changes over the past years due to population pressure; as people continue to clear forests and drain wetlands to create new agricultural land and establish new settlements. The proposed project will link catchment rehabilitation with improving livelihoods for the basin communities. Project interventions will include providing support to increasing farm production, reducing soil fertility loss, enhancing catchment afforestation, increasing public awareness of the environmental concerns of the shared ecosystems, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
