Ol-Ngobor Multipurpose Water resources development project

Water Multi-purpose Reservoir

Overview

Summary

Project is located in Western Kenya and was identified and prepared under the Mara River Basin Project. Project interventions include construction of a water supply system providing 36,000 m3/day of treated water; development of irrigation command area of 21,800 ha, and hydropower generation capacity of 10 MW.

The Ol Ngobor Dam site was identified as a hydropower dam site during the Study on the National Water Master Plan (JICA 1992) and the Study of Integrated Regional development Master Plan for the Lake Basin Development Area (1987). The site is situated on the Migori River in a remote area approximately 20km from Kilgoris and about 35 km upstream of Migori. Since the identification of the dam site, no further work has been done. The project site is situated in an area of low population density largely occupied by nomadic stock farmers. A relatively large dam was proposed and this has been taken forward in consideration of the development of a multipurpose project. Irrigated area is 3000ha. Installed capacity is 2.76 MW. Estimated investment costs is US$410.8 million.
