Moi University Multipurpose water resources development project
Overview
Summary
Project is located in Western Kenya and was identified and prepared under the Mara River Basin Project. Project interventions include A dam of height 10m with a full supply storage of 0.307Mm3 has been proposed for the supply of water to the Moi University complex. If the wall were to be heightened to an effective height of 16m the storage would climb to 1.64Mm3. Installed capacity is 0.16MW. Size of land irrigated is 700ha. Investment costs is US$ 36.7 million.
Description
The Moi University is located in the Kesses Division, Uasin Gishu District of the Rift Valley Province. The University currently receives its water supply from the "žKesses" dam (sometimes referred to as Lessos dam). The capacity of this dam is limited and the water demand of the university is increasing rapidly. As a result, the University in cooperation with the Ministry of Water has identified a new dam site on the same river (Sambul) as the existing Kesses dam, about 4 km further downstream. Feasibility studies were carried out in June 2000 and a design report in 2006.
