Overview

Summary

Project is located in Western Kenya and was identified and prepared under the Mara River Basin Project. Project interventions include The proposed Keben dam is located along Mogobich River near the edge of the Tindiret North Forest - Mau Complex in an area of zero or near zero population density. The dam site is situated about 1 km upstream of a track and bridge over the stream. The stream drops by a total fall of around 140 m over this distance. The dam site is in the very upper reaches of the basin at an altitude of 2,350 m. The proposed project is described in the Keben dam Draft Preliminary Design Report compiled by (June 2010) the Lake Victoria North Water Services Board for the local water users association. A dam with a maximum effective depth of 8 m was proposed. This has been increased to 18 m in this proposal. The main purpose of the project is for domestic water supply, horticulture and livestock watering (dairy cattle). As such it is already a multipurpose project. There are also opportunities for hydropower generation, fisheries and aquaculture and watershed management (including reforestation). A dam of height of 9.5m with full supply storage (at 8m) of 0.018Mm3. Installed capacity 0.18MW. Size of land irrigated is 400ha.
