Gogo Falls Multipurpose Water Resources Development Project

This Project is located in Western Kenya and was identified and prepared under the Mara River Basin Project. Project interventions include construction of water supply system with capacity to supply 86,400 m³/day of treated water and including construction of a 155 MCM storage reservoir; hydropower generation capacity of 20 MW; and development of an irrigation command area of 30,000 ha. The project is expected to benefit 1.15 million people.

NIB has started development of the Lower Kuja public irrigation project, which will used water from the Kuja (lower Gucha) River. The project comprises phased development for up to a gross area of 7,833 ha using water directly abstracted from the river using a diversion weir about 5 km downstream of Gogo Falls. The project is at bidding stage with a feasibility study completed on an area of 5,800ha with infrastructure proposed for a command area of 2,700ha smallholder irrigation. Phase 1 for 700ha (but incorporating the entire major upstream infrastructure) was advertised by NIB for bidding July 2011. The proposal is for gravity surface irrigation from a weir on the Gucha river not far from the small town of MaCalder in the lower basin area and upstream of the confluence with the Migori river. The project is therefore starting even without a regulation dam. Size of irrigated area is 20,000ha. Installed capacity is 9.04MW. The estimated investment costs is US$523.7 million.
