Namba Kodero Multipurpose Water Resources Development Project
Overview
Summary
Namba Kodero site was identified as a multipurpose dam site (hydropower, irrigation and flood control) dam site during the Study on the National Water Master Plan (JICA,1992) and the Study of Integrated Regional development Master Plan for the Lake Basin Development Area (1987). The site is situated on the Migori River in a relatively remote area approximately 20km from Migori and about 10 km upstream of the confluence with the Gucha. Since the identification of the dam site, no further work has been done. The originally identified purposes for the dam site were power generation, irrigation (Lower Kuja project) and flood control. A relatively large dam was proposed and this has been taken forward in consideration of the development of a multipurpose project.
Feasibility study allows for supply to 1.5million people @75l/day. Population to be served 1,728,000 which seems rather high. 1m3/s has been assumed to supply 1,152,000 persons. Irrigated area is 12,000ha. Installed capacity is 6.41MW. Estimated investment costs is US$410.8 million.
