Bugesera Integrated Water and Irrigation Project
Overview
Summary
Bugesera Project area straddles the border between Burundi and Rwanda and covers the Akanyaru wetlands, the Lakes Cyohoha and Rweru, and their watersheds. The area, located in the Nyabarongo Sub-basin of Kagera River Basin, has undergone rapid degradation leading to loss of forest cover, widespread soil erosion and sedimentation of the rivers and lakes. The project has four components: (1) integrated agriculture and watershed development and management; (2) watershed management; (3) fisheries resources development and management and; (4) capacity building and project coordination. Among others, the multipurpose project is expected to develop 4,200 ha of irrigation land benefitting 6,500 farmers; restore 765 ha of degraded riverbanks and lake shores; restock the two lakes with 1 million tilapia fingerlings; train 4,500 people in alternative livelihood activities; and create 4,000 jobs.
Identification/ of the project was carried out by NELSAP-CU in 2010-2012 with grant financing from the AfDB/AWF
