Regional Transport and Navigation Development Project.

Transport Inland Port & Waterway

Overview

Summary

The Regional Transport and Navigation Development Project is one of several priority projects under the Integrated Water Resources Development and Management Plan for the Baro-Akobo-Sobat Sub-basin in the Eastern Nile region. The project objective is to (a) investigate and evaluate the feasibility of investments to improve the role of navigation in the Baro-Akobo-Sobat sub-basin within the context of regional transport and access to markets as a whole; and (b) carry out the necessary planning and design work to get the project ready for implementation and support its implementation. The study will look carefully at the transport needs that will be generated by accelerated development within the sub-basin, and propose multi-modal solutions to the needs. Project interventions will include a feasibility study to assess the possible approaches to maintaining a navigable river from Gambella to the mouth of the Sobat River. The will include an assessment of vessel types/sizes, port infrastructure requirements, options for connectivity with overland transport, and intermodal transfer facilities requirements.

The project identification was completed in 2017 with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Baro-Akobo-Sobat multipurpose water resources development study project.
