Establishment of the EN Irrigation Management Information System
Overview
Summary
Eastern Nile sub-system, which is shared by four countries (Egypt, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Sudan), has a total area of 1.98 million km2 covering the catchments of the Blue Nile (Abay), Atbara (Tekezze), Baro-Akobo-Sobat, the White Nile between Malakal and Khartoum, and the Main Nile. The runoff from this region contributes between 85 and 90 per cent of the annual Nile flows, but the flows exhibit strong seasonality.
The Establishment of the EN Irrigation Management Information System is one of several priority projects identified by the Eastern Nile states under the Eastern Nile Multi-Sectoral Investment Opportunity Analysis (MSIOA). This project will Establish a network of computerized weather stations in the EN sub basin and provide real time information on daily weather data and potential evapotranspiration (ETo) values to enhance/assist proper irrigation water management.
The project identification was completed in 2015 with funding from the World Bank under the Nile Cooperation for Results Project (NCORE).
