Kinyeti Multipurpose

Water Multi-purpose Reservoir

Overview

Summary

Kinyeti development project is located near the city of Torit in Eastern Equatorial State, South Sudan. The Kinyeti project is centered around the construction of a multipurpose dam with 45 MCM storage reservoir 15 km upstream of the city of Torit to provide multiple benefits including: (a) provision of water for a 1.78 MW hydropower station producing 8 GWh/annum of firm energy suppling 80,000 people; the use of electricity will contribute to reducing deforestation in the catchment area; (b) the reservoir will also secure drinking water for inhabitants in the city of Torit, and support capture fisheries and recreational activities; a water supply and sanitation system with capacity to producing 11,000 m3 of treated water per day will be constructed to benefiting 100,000 people; (c) the regulation of the water flow through the dam will provide water for irrigation of a command area of 1,000 ha benefitting 10,00 people, and construction of 100 fishponds of 200 m² for aquaculture production benefiting 2,000 people; (d) the dam will provide water for watering of 50,000 cattle, 48,000 sheep and 105,000 goats all year, and lastly, (e) the project will satisfy an environmental flow during the dry season, build capacity of forest rangers and support communities in the upper Kinyeti River Catchment to adopt alternative livelihood activities.

The Kinyeti River Multipurpose Development Project is one of the three short term projects proposed as part of the Baro-Akobo-Sobat (BAS) Multipurpose Water Resources Development Study Project. The BAS Project itself was part of the initial 7 sub-projects of the Integrated Development of Eastern Nile (IEDN) Project. Activities under the project commenced in 2008-20012 funded with a seed grant from the Netherlands and French governments. Later on, project preparation activities were carried out with funding from the African Water Facility and NEPAD-IPPF. These included the feasibility study for the Kinyeti Multipurpose project funded by the African Water Facility in 2015-2017.
