Pibor Water Harvesting Project

Water Watershed Management

Overview

Summary

The Pibor Water Harvesting Project was one of 13 potential first-round investment projects identified in 2007 under the Cooperative Regional Assessment (CRA) of Watershed Management in the Eastern Nile Basin. The 13 projects identified under the CRA focused on watered degradation 'hot spots"™ characterized by increasing population pressure on a degrading natural resource base. The Project Area is located in the middle reaches of the Pibor River in the Pibor Payam in Pibor County of Jonglei State, South Pibor Water Harvesting Project was to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable rangeland management in the Pibor Payem. Project interventions include construction of low bunds within the Pibor plains to produce better pastures; control of bush burning to limit its harmful impacts; introduction of fodder banks/stockpiles to provide feed for calves and lactating females; multiplication and supply of forage grass seeds; training of community-based animal health workers to control livestock diseases; delineation and demarcation of stock migration routes; construction of watering points and holding grounds along the migration routes; strengthening quarantine arrangements with neighbouring countries; building capacity of local communities in provision of extension services on animal husbandry, water harvesting, forage production and livestock marketing; supporting the development of strategic landuse plans at state and local levels.

The prefeasibility study for the project was carried out in the period 2010-2012 under the Watershed Delineation and Prioritization Project.
