Kenya (Kisumu) - Tanzania (Mwanza) Power Transmission Line
Energy Power Interconnector
Overview
Summary
This
project is a 400kV transmission line from Kenya to Tanzania, aimed at not only importing from Kenya (Rongai/Kisumu) but
transfer of power in both directions depending on the availability of capacity
with aim of security and reliability of supply as well as diversification of
source of supply. The rationale of the project is to provide part of the
backbone of the transmission grid around Lake Victoria as recommended in the
East African Power Master Plan Study

Description
This project is a 400kV transmission line from Kenya to Tanzania, estimated to cost USD 281m. The objective is to not only import from Kenya (Rongai/Kisumu) but transfer of power in both directions depending on the availability of capacity with aim of security and reliability of supply as well as diversification of source of supply. The rationale of the project is to provide part of the backbone of the transmission grid around Lake Victoria as recommended in the East African Power Master Plan Study. The other parts of the Lake Victoria Transmission Ring are either under construction or their studies have been completed; it is therefore vital to complete this remaining portion of the ring. Feasibility studies and detailed design are currently underway and will assist in refining the design and cost estimate of implementation for which funding is sought in the NEL-IP. It is estimated that some 2.7 m people will benefit from this project.
