Countries to celebrate Nile Day on 22 February 2025

Member States of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) will commemorate Nile Day regionally on Saturday 22 February 2025 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. National celebrations will also be held in each of the Member States – Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

The theme for 2025 is: “Strengthening Nile Cooperation for Climate Resilience and Shared Prosperity”.

Why we celebrate Nile Day

The Day is an opportunity for us to highlight the importance and benefits of cooperating on the transboundary waters of the Nile River for the sustainable management and development of a common resource.

Nile Day is also an occasion for Nile Basin citizens and stakeholders to exchange experiences and ideas on topical Nile Basin issues such as climate extremes, pollution, floods and droughts, and how they can be addressed through cooperation.

On Nile Day, Member States re-affirm their commitment to cooperation, celebrate the varied cultures across the Nile Basin, and reflect on how shared benefits through cooperation are transforming lives, communities and economies.

Breakthroughs in electricity, water management, science

Twenty-six years of cooperation through NBI have resulted in tangible benefits in the areas of data-sharing, science-based decision making, water management, energy access, food security, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience.

The regional Rusumo hydropower station, for example, is now supplying electricity to the national grids of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania. This is significantly contributing to energy security in the three countries.

These achievements will feature in an exhibition on Nile Day.
