The word reservoir is derived from reserve, which means to retain for future use. In the context of river flow, reservoirs are structures built to hold back water to increase its availability when that water is needed. Their abilty to provide protection from droughts but also floods makes reservoirs an important structural measure for adaptation to impacts of global climate change, and tools for attaining water security.
Reservoir operation consists of several control factors that define patterns for guiding a sequence of releases to meet downstream demands. Coordination among reservoir operators is, therefore, critical not only for sharing information but also in decision making to improve the systems‘ benefits.
The 6th Nile Basin Development Forum virtual conferences resume on Monday 29th March 2021 with a stream of webinars on Reservoir Operations and Coordination. The objective of the stream is to identify norms, needs and options for reservoir coordination in the Nile Basin and will focus on the degree of reservoir coordination needed in the Nile Basin.
The expected outcomes from this conversation are; an understanding of the current status and barriers for reservoir coordination; an understanding of the needs of coordination and risks of non-coordination; an understanding of the role and responsibility of institutions to share information to allow safe operation and coordination of reservoir infrastructure.
Webinars under this stream include:
RO1: The role and significance of coordinated operation of water storage reservoirs (March 29, 2021 14:00 – 16:00HRS EAT
RO2: The need for information exchange: Forecasting and managing floods and drought in the Nile Basin (March 31, 2021 14:00 – 16:00HRS EAT)
Other webinars in the week are the following:
TG1: Multi-layer Transboundary Water Cooperation (Legal/Institutional): State of Affairs 2020 (Tuesday March 30, 2021, 1:45 – 4:00pm (EAT))
WF1: Tools, Approaches, and Technologies to Understand and Enhance a State of Water Productivity to Gain in Food and Nutrition Security (Thursday April 1, 2021, 9:45am – 12:00pm (EAT))
The webinars are organised as part of the 6th Nile Basin Development Forum, under the overarching theme: Rethinking Regional Investments in the Nile Basin: Water | Energy | Food | Environment| Climate Change.
