Water below the surface would seem like a strange phenomenon. However, groundwater, as it is referred to, has existed for thousands of years. It is water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil, sand and rock.
Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered in water. But of that water, just 1% is readily available for human use, and of that 1%, 99% of it is stored beneath our feet as groundwater. We all rely on groundwater in some way, so it's important that we understand this vital resource.
It is on the subject of Groundwater Management that the Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat has organised a webinar series from March 15-16, 2021 under the theme: ‘Enhancing investments in transboundary groundwater in the Nile Basin’. The objective of the webinar is to promote the improvement of knowledge and understanding of the role of the shared groundwater in addressing current development issues in Nile Basin Countries and in buffering the effects of climate variability
Some of the questions participants will interface with are; What are the current trends in the groundwater use and exploitation in the Nile Basin; What are the main barriers to groundwater development in the shared aquifers along the Nile Basin; What innovative approaches are available for boosting knowledge and understanding of the transboundary hydrogeological systems and in the Nile Basin; What tools/ options enhancing the sustainable management of transboundary groundwater in improving water security and minimizing climate related risks; What policy options are available for strengthening groundwater management at national and transboundary levels?
The Groundwater Management stream will have two sessions:
- Challenges and opportunities facing transboundary groundwater investments and use in the Nile Basin (success and failure stories/lessons learned) – March 15, 2021 10:00 – 12:00HRS EAT.
- New approaches (tools, methods and technology) used for improved management of transboundary ground/surface water for sustainable use – March 16, 2021 10:00 – 12:00HRS EAT.
The webinars are organised as part of the 6th Nile Basin Development Forum, under the overarching theme: Rethinking Regional Investments in the Nile Basin: Water | Energy | Food | Environment| Climate Change.
