pdf Nile Basin Water Resources Atlas #

The Nile Basin Water Resources Atlas provides a platform to visualize the status of Nile Basin resources, their distribution in time and space, observed trends, vital statistics and water use and demand by the major sectors. It is structured in seven chapters introducing the reader to the Nile Basin location, physiography, spatial and temporal variation of major climate variables and hydrology in the major sub-basins presented at selected key stations. It provides an estimate of water demands, water use by key sectors and an overview of major hydraulic infrastructure. The Atlas also presents the current state of basin monitoring, focusing on hydro-meteorological monitoring highlighting the identified gaps and what NBI has recommended as the most suitable monitoring network.

pdf Nile Basin Trans-boundary Wetlands #

The Nile Basin is endowed with rich and diverse wetlands crucial for the provision of multiple ecosystem services and goods, which are beneficial to livelihoods of its citizens, economies and associated ecosystems. Some of the Nile Basin wetlands are designated as Protected Areas, Migratory Birds Flyways, Important Birds Areas, World Heritage Sites as well as Wetlands of International importance under Ramsar Convention, which include the Sudd Marshes in South Sudan. Find out more about the NBI project on Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Utilisation of Ecosystem Services of Wetlands of Transboundary Relevance in the Nile Basin.

pdf Environmental and Social Management Framework for NCORE Project #

The ESMF spells out the Environmental and Social safeguards, institutional arrangements and capacity required for its implementation. This ensures that sub‐projects under the NCORE project meets the national and local Environmental and Social requirements, and is also consistent with OP 4.01, OP 4.12 and OP 4.10 of the World Bank.
The ESMF sets out principles and processes agreeable to all parties.

pdf Understanding the Nile Basin Hydrology #

Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the major components of the water balance over the Nile Basin and its sub-basins. It accounts for about 87% of the basin’s rainfall but this value varies from a sub-basin to another Based on land use/cover and prevailing climatic conditions. It is difficult to measure evapotranspiration but recent advances in satellite observations have enabled its estimation over large areas such as the Nile basin. The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) has utilized such advances and generated adataset of ET estimates over the Nile Basin spanning the period 2000 to date. Analyzing this dataset revealed some interesting insights for water management.
